The African walnut, Coula edulis Baill. Olacaceae, is a species found in Africa’s moist forests. It produces seeds of high nutritional value that are widely harvested and marketed by Central and West African populations. However, the lack of information on propagation techniques is the main obstacle to domestication of the species and to its use as part of local agroforestry systems. The aim of this study, conducted in parallel in a nursery and in the natural environment, was to improve the characterisation of C. edulis germination and determine the suitability of the species for aerial layering propagation. The results show that C. edulis ger- mination occurs after several months, with very low to zero success rates. The pre-treatments applied to the seeds had no effect on the duration and success rate of germination. Air layering method, on the other hand, produced far more vigorous C. edulis plants within a much shorter time than nursery-raised seedlings. Pre- liminary results with air layering are promising, with good prospects for prop- agation and domestication of the species. The use in agroforestry systems of Coula edulis plants obtained by air layering should therefore be considered.
