For more than 30 years, certain large trees were felled in Gabon and the logs from them mixed in with logs from marketable species. Their wood was never properly identified, despite its distinctive structures, but has now been recognized as belonging to the new species Xanthocercis rabiensis van der Maesen (Fabaceae). This wood is described, as are a few simple features, to help to recognize it among botanically and anatomically similar species.
