Abstract

The International Union for Conservation of Nature, also known as the World Conservation Union, was founded in Fontainebleau in 1948 by French and Swiss scientists and UNESCO. It has since expanded to every continent. The quality of its membership and the very special way in which it operates set it apart from other international organisations.
