Tropical forests have not really been managed according to the meaning of the word «management» given by Northern countries. An overall analysis of past failures, of the present know-how and the difficulties to be overcome is carried out.
The growing interest in this question by a rising number of authorities as well as the increasing knowledge of researchers and specialists, helps to find a remedy for the situation, but the collaboration of all those involved in rural development is required so that the forest is no longer a reserve of agricultural lands and its own usefulness and value are recognized.
