Abstract

Controls of performances carried out between 1984 and 1987 in 5 sheep flocks of Martinique (French west Indies) gave data concerning growth from the 10th to the 130th days (age α2αat weaning) for 1655 lambs of local phenotypes (Blackbelly and Creoles) and of european crossbreds. Lacaune crossbreds and in general European crosses have a better growth and are heavier when weaned than other breeds. However this advantage is not the rule in every farms studied. Farming technics and management of the flock are twice more explanatory on the growth than phenotype. The study of the seasonal effects indicates a strong relationship between a production of grass of good quality and the growth of lambs. In conclusion we recommend to increase and standardize the methods of farming before any attempts of improving production by the way of crosses.
