Abstract

The author recounts the recent development of a milking camel breeding stock, aimed at the supply of the Mauritanian capital. Several herds ranging from 10 up to 20 heads are kept in suburban encampments. Although day time is spent outside the compounds, the absence of real pasture in the surroundings forces the owners to
their animals every evening with an imported Senegalese
concentrate. In two daily milkings, 3 to 4 liters are collected daily per female, exclusive of an unknown intake by the Young.
