Abstract

Background: The Azawak cattle breed, adapted to Sahelian environmental conditions, was chosen for a closed-core selection program at the Toukounous experimental station in Niger. Aim: In order to develop a model for predicting the breeding values of candidate breeding animals that improve milk and meat production, this study aims to analyze the genetic influence of selection for weight performance on milk productivity in the Azawak cattle breed. Methods: The pedigree used comprises 1691 complete lactations from 649 cows and 1396 calf birth weights. Genetic parameters were analysed using a multi-trait animal model resolved by Bayesian methodologies and after multivariate analysis of environmental factors. Results: Lactation traits and calf birth weight were affected by environmental and genetic effects, with heritability ranging from 0.14 to 0.32 for lactation traits and 0.06 for calf birth weight. Non-significant and close to zero genetic (-0.26 to -0.08) and phenotypic (-0.06 to 0.07) correlations between lactation traits and calf birth weight suggest that selection for milk performance is unlikely to affect early weight performance. Conclusions: Further studies are needed to assess the genetic influence of milk productivity on the late growth performance of Azawak cattle.
