Technical and economic performance of quail egg producers in the Atlantic department, Benin

Background: Given the growing need for healthy, nutritious food among a significant proportion of the population, the development of the quail egg value chain is becoming a serious option for meeting the demand eggs in Benin. Aim: This study aimed to analyze the technical efficiency of quail egg producers, the profitability of quail egg production and the effect of technical efficiency levels on profitability in southern Benin. Methods: The used data was obtained through a survey conducted with a structured questionnaire and administered to a sample of 37 quail egg producers. The technical efficiency scores were estimated using a Cobb-Douglas stochastic frontier production function. The profitability analysis was performed using the margin method. Results: The average technical efficiency score was 71.8% with a minimum of 18.2% and a maximum of 97.4%. The majority of the studied producers were in general technically efficient. However, there are significant gaps that some producers can still close by learning to better allocate production resources. The results also revealed that actual production costs amounted to 2722 FCFA/quail and represented 73.6% of total production costs. With a gross margin of 3900 FCFA/quail, a net margin of 2567 FCFA/quail, a farm income of 3543 FCFA/quail in six months and a financial rate of return of 78.0%, quail egg production was profitable. Moreover, these last four indicators were positively correlated with technical efficiency levels. Conclusions: There are real opportunities to improve the earnings of technically weak producers by improving their technical efficiency through training in good production practices.
