Abstract

In an animal health survey based on regular visits to 15 poultry farms on the outskirts of N’Djamena, 358 carcasses were registered following 180 visits. Forty of the carcasses were submitted to post-mortem bacteriological and parasitological examinations. Coccidiosis and colibacteriosis appeared to be the main causes of poultry mortality and were linked to the lack of hygiene and financial means, essential to proper farming. Most of the farmers surveyed were civil servants who used poultry breeding to supplement their income. To reduce the mortality it is therefore necessary to follow hygiene rules.
