Abstract

Within the national survey on “kid mortality in the communal lands of Zimbabwe”, the characteristics of 219 housing units used for small ruminants were registered and analysed. The data collected refer to building materials, the shape and structure of the buildings, the type of environment, use and maintenance. Five types of buildings have been identified on the basis of their structural characteristics (shape, area, building materials). By studying jointly the building structure, its use and its environment, both natural and socio-economic, four simple design and utilisation patterns for housing units were proposed for the communal areas of Zimbabwe, i.e. housing in the traditional environment, in an area of intense cultivation, large traditional pens in arid areas and a minimal housing unit. After analysing the utilisation constraints and limitations, working options have been proposed with a view to improving existing structures.
