Abstract

While there is a reduction, and even an elimination of African elephants (Loxodonta africana) populations in many African countries, the observation in the Togo of an increase of their number appears as a unique feature in Western and central Africa to be noticed. This recording results from a recent survey carried out throughout the whole Togo and which reveals a 145-heads population, i.e. an increase of 81.2 % regarding the estimations made in 1980 which indicated only 80 heads.
