Abstract

The final result of pig production in tropical areas depends on a complex whole of factors where interfere genetics and environment. In spite of their rather unfavourable influence, the Large White pig brought in Sao Tome and Principe Democratic Republic has revealed a satisfactory adaptability level, characterized by the following parameters:

Number of litter per sow and per year: 1.6

Average number of piglets born alive and per dropping: 8.5 Average weight of piglets at dropping: 1.2 kg

Average number of piglets weaned per sow after 42 days: 6.2 Average weight of piglets at weaning; 5.3 kg
