Côte d’Ivoire is a country open to cross-border transhumance because of its climate and the potential of its markets in the West African region. Space sharing, contacts and socioeconomic activities lead to the emergence and transmission of several infectious diseases including brucellosis. The objective of this study was to investigate the spatial distribution of brucellosis induced by transhumance in Côte d’Ivoire. Serological analyses were performed on 885 cattle, 83 sheep, 14 goats and 63 herdspeople in seven regions, five of which receive transhumant cattle and two do not. Individual seroprevalences were 4.86% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 3.18‒6.53) in cattle, 4.82% (95% CI: 0‒10.27) in sheep, and 7.14% (95% CI: 0‒23.11) in goats; no cases were found among herdspeople. Transhumance from neighboring countries did not increase disease seroprevalence in sedentary herds. Cattle in the transhumance area were less infected (4.1%) than those in the area where transhumance was not practiced (7.8%). The high seroprevalence rates of sedentary cattle in the non-transhumance zone suggest that brucellosis control should be intensified in sedentary herds.
