Abstract

The objective of this study was to identify the most appropriate non-linear mathematical model to describe  the growth curve of the Sardi breed. This study was conducted on a flock of sheep reared in the Krakra breeding station located in El Borouj, Morocco. The flock included 763 males and 649 females corresponding respectively to 3814 and 3240 observations for the following typical ages: birth, 10 days, 30 days, 90 days and adult weight. To model the relationship between weight and age, five models were fitted to the growth data, i.e. Brody, Logistic, Gompertz, von Bertalanffy, and Richards. The growth models were fitted to the data using the maximum likelihood method. The Akaike information criterion (AIC), Bayesian information criterion (BIC) and deviance were used to compare the statistical relevance of the different growth models. Among these models, von Bertalanffy’s function had the lowest values of AIC, BIC and deviance, indicating that this model provided the best representation of data for both sexes of this breed. The parameters of this function can be used to define new selection criteria and improve production predictions through better feed management.
