Note on the use of barymetry for indirect selection of live weight in Gobra zebu cattle in Senegal

Abstract

Genetic parameters of live weight and linear measurements of Gobra zebu from birth to 3 years of age were calculated by the authors from a set of data collected between 1969 and 1981. Genetic relationships between live weights and linear measurements were used to determine the correlative response of live weight to indirect selection. For a pair of variables (weight-measurements) the level of indirect response depended on genetic correlation and heritabilities. Use of live weight data represents the best method for genetic improvement of beef production. However, because of certain difficulties in measuring live weight, linear measurements can be used for indirect selection.
