Abstract

The purpose of this study was to improve our knowledge of the utilisation of rangelands in the dry season and the mobility of farmers in Sylvopastoral Area of Senegal. It was carried out from October 1989 to July 1990 in the Tatki boring area. The relationships between the rangeland utilisation rate and various environmental parameters (biomass and floristic composition of the herbaceous vegetation during late rainy season, distance to the boring site and type of soil) were first investigated. The incidence of the biomass, floristic composition of the herbaceous vegetation and of the rangeland utilisation rate on the mobility of farmers, where thereafter examined. In conclusion, the limits of the study for elaborating models of rangeland utilisation and for improving our knowledge of transhumance were defined.
