Fumonisins are mycotoxins produced by the genus Fusarium, especially Fusarium verticillioides (formerly called F. moniliforme) and F. proliferatum. They are widely distributed and have major economic and sanitary impacts. The most common ones are fumonisin B1 (FB1) and fumonisin B2 (FB2). FB1 is a potent carcinogen in laboratory animals and is suspected of causing esophageal cancer in humans. Fumonisins are also considered to alter intestinal integrity in poultry, leading to necrotic enteritis causing diarrheas and reducing animal performance. This article presents the prevalence of FB1 and FB2 in poultry feeds collected in several sites (wilayas) in algeria. The LC/MS/MS analytical method was used to determine the concentrations of fumonisins. FB1 and FB2 were found in the 69 samples tested, of which 11.60% had concentrations below 400 μg/kg, 53.62% had concentrations below 3000 μg/kg and 34.78% had concentrations above 3000 μg/kg. This is the first study in Algeria showing that it would be important to screen poultry feeds for fumonisins and to avoid using feeds with levels above thresholds considered high. It would therefore be warranted to establish limits of fumonisins not to be exceeded in poultry feed. In case of performance losses and immune system dysfunction, veterinarians should investigate the possible presence of fumonisins.
