Résumé

Following a request from livestock owners, a campaign to eradicate tsetse flies was conducted in Dafinso (Burkina Faso) in 1993 and 1994. Traps impregnated with insecticide (Cypermethrin) were laid, and all livestock treated with deltamethrin. In February 1993 (before the campaign), the number of Glossina tachinoides (main species) trapped was 11.7/trap/day. In July 1993 (two months after laying the traps and the first treatment of cattle) the figure was zero. Entomological surveys throughout the period showed a rapid, lasting and almost total disappearance of the tsetse population. During 1994, no tsetse was caught. Livestock owners were actively and financially involved in the campaign from start to finish. The present example shows the importance of cooperation from rural communities for successful and sustainable campaigns against trypanosomiasis.
